DIY Super Cute Lego Table

DIY lego storage and play table

I am pretty much crazy about this simple little IKEA hack.  It's the brilliant idea of my clever brother-in-law, and Chip simplified it slightly, so it can be done at home.   The Legos drive me crazy.  We had a few sets, and I was delighted that the girls loved them so much (I mean, it's simple engineering, right?) but I quickly got over it when they were just everywhere and I was frequently stepping on them.  I resorted to hiding them, which really isn't a great solution.

Here is what you need to make this happen:

IKEA Storage Table (it also comes in white!) | Four 10" x 10" Lego Baseplates (you can also get pink or purple, which would be really cute with the white table!) | Dremel | Spray Glue

First, remove the top tray from the table.  Make a square by laying all the Lego baseplates together and place the tray on top of the square.  Trace the circle shape of the tray onto the baseplates with a marker (be careful not to get it on the tray!). Next, cut right inside the lines (about 1/8" of an inch) with the Dremel cutting wheel. It needs to be slightly smaller than the tray so it will fit inside of it. (You may want to practice on the unused corners of the baseplates before cutting the actual shape.)  If needed, lightly sand the edges of the baseplates to remove any sharp edges.  Chip also mentioned that you can cut the plates with some very sharp scissors, so if a Dremel intimidates you, maybe try that route.

Next, spray the bottom of the baseplates with the spray glue, and place them firmly into the tray.  If you haven't used spray glue before, note this is best done outside and you should lay the baseplates face down on cardboard or something similar before spraying.  It will get everywhere!

Now, you are ready to play!

This table is so ideal, because all the trays come apart, so you have ample storage for all the pieces, and it also spins around for easy play and building.  I also love the look of it and you can easily leave it out because it's so pretty!  It's not especially inexpensive (the table is $69, and the baseplates are $8 each), but neither are Legos, so I found it to be a worthy investment for efficiently storing all the tiny things the girls love so much that drive me crazy!

Hope you are inspired if you are overwhelmed post-Christmas!
