laundry room organization and safety

Since moving our laundry room upstairs to a more central part of our home, safety has become an even greater priority with the room more accessible to the kids. Thankfully, our washer and dryer have child locks, which are super handy, but keeping the detergent out of reach from small hands is up to us.

The American Cleaning Institute has launched PACKETS UP! to raise awareness about the importance of keeping liquid laundry packets up and out of reach of little ones. ACI created this free handy little cling that you can place in a conspicuous place to always remember to put the detergent packets away. This is such a big deal when your laundry room is frequented by curious little toddlers!

And even if you are diligent about putting liquid laundry packets away, it's helpful to have a reminder for those who do laundry less frequently, or grandparents or caregivers who aren't used to keeping their environments kid-friendly. It's easy to overlook the laundry room as a place that needs to be child-proofed, but curious little one’s love looking through cabinets and drawers, and these highly concentrated detergent packets must be kept up, well out of reach and in their original, closed containers, as accidents can happen in the blink of an eye.

I keep our detergent and laundry packets stored in secure bins on top of high shelves, or at the very back of the laundry counter, where even Vivi can't reach. The best thing to do is keep packets in their original packaging, up and out of sight and reach of small children. In the same way you are careful about storing kitchen and bathroom cleaning supplies, the storage of laundry products is just as critical to prevent accidents in the home.
