the den

living room inspiration

I’ve been working on and off to get our den refreshed; it started out sort of a toffee color (if you scroll to the bottom of this post, you’ll see part of how it used to look) and I’ve been really wanting to brighten it up.  We spend a lot of time here, so it was in need of some love!  The most recent addition was this gorgeous lamp from Lulu and Georgia, and it gave me the extra incentive needed photograph the room and share.  Isn’t it beautiful?  I love that avocado green, and the geometric dimension to the base!

It’s the perfect pop of color, and coordinates well with the vintage needlepoint landscape on the wall (a wedding gift to my parents from one of my grandmother’s close friends – I adore it!).

Lulu and Georgia has lots of other great home decor items (their rugs are some of my favorites – see some inspiration here and here!).  If you are feeling inspired, they are offering 20% off with the code LAYBABYLAY20 until this Friday, April 4th!

The little “coffee table” is one of the tables my dad made for Vivi’s party, and it’s perfect for this room where we spend a lot of time with the girls, and it’s extra fun styled with some of their favorite books, a definite hit with Vivi.

I’ve posted about these shelves before, but they are one of my favorite features.  They are Ikea brackets spray painted gold, and then paired with some old barn wood.  I love the effect.

The art was done by Vivi – she aptly named it “the egg.”

Now, if I can just decide what I’d like to do around the TV.  It’s on the other wall.  I’m really enjoying all the bright white and sunlight in this room now, though!!  Thanks so much to Lulu and Georgia for the beautiful lamp – be  sure to check out all the lovely inspiration on their site – I can’t stop thinking about this rug.

Gorgeous! What paint color did you use on the walls? I love how bright and cheerful the den feels.

Beautiful! I love those chairs too! Did you re-upholster them or buy them like that?

Quick question, Joni…I see that you have the large decorative bulbs in your overhead chandelier. It looks as if you took the globes/shades off and just left the exposed bulbs. Is the fixture newer or older? I ask because I was going for a similar effect with one of my older chandeliers and when the bulbs were put in it made a very soft buzzing noise which alarmed me. I googled it and it seems like nothing electrical but still worries me. Anyway, just wondering. Thanks!

Hi Jeanie! Yes, that’s what we did. I didn’t like the fixture, but couldn’t splurge on a new one, so that was my solution for now.:) We have a dimmer on the light, and they do buzz when I have it turned up all the way, but when they are lower, it’s fine. We honestly don’t use the overhead light in that room a lot – mostly just the lamps, and it gets a lot of light through the window. Hope that helps!

Where did you find the rug? Please!

    • jonilay says:

Hi Ashley! Here is the rug: . It’s by Karastan – it was a very generous wedding gift, so it’s more than we would normally be able to spend on a rug.

I do love your rug! The rug in the link looks a little different. Is the link to a similar rug or the same one? Thanks!

    • jonilay says:

Hi Melanie! I think it is a little different – I’ve tried finding the same exact one, and that’s the closest I can find (it’s a Karastan rug). We got it about 6 years ago, so they may have discontinued that exact style. The one I linked to looks very similar, but the one we have looks a bit more “washed out.”

I was so excited to see this when I saw you instragam it. I was encouraged you have a cream/beige-ish sofa..i have one too and was feeling like i wasn’t bold enough when i chose it. and what kind of plant is that in the corner?

    • jonilay says:

Thanks, Juli! It’s a fiddle leaf fig plant – I found it at Home Depot. It was only $35.:) It adds a lot to the space! It’s my first plant – so let’s hope I do a good job with it.

You must have the MOST beautiful camellia bush! Love all of your fresh blooms. :)

Thanks, Cami! We have a HUGE camellia bush on the side of our house – it’s my favorite, and I love that they bloom for so long!

Love all the books, especially the large Narnia compilation (we gave that to my dad for Father’s day one year) and the Secret Garden! So fresh and inviting!

The pictures of your living room turned out beautifully. Do you mind sharing what camera you use?

    • jonilay says:

Hi Heather! Thanks so much! I use a Canon 20D – it’s actually several years old, and a wide angle lens or 50mm for most of the shots. Hope that helps!

Hi! Do you mind sharing the spray paint brand/color you used for the IKEA shelf brackets? I’ve had a hard time finding a gold that isn’t brassy or yellow!
