I'm working on a few projects right now, and here is a fun little DIY that is really quick, and great for displaying small treasures and such.  If you are confident enough to use the jigsaw, it goes pretty fast, or you can enlist the handier person in your life to help! (sources from above: faceted table lamp, similar record player)

What you will need:

24" x 24" birch plywood (or edge glued board works well, too - that is actually what I used) | 1 - 3/4" square dowel | 2" wood screws | picture hanging hardware for back of shelf | 2" wood screws | drill | paint and paintbrush

I sketched out a few simple shapes on paper to see what I would like, and then sketched it the final design onto the board with a thin sharpie.  Then, I cut out the shape with a jigsaw (be sure to use eye protection, and use the right blades!  make sure you have a wood cutting blade, and I used the one made for curves) and sand the edges and top and bottom to make it smooth.

Next, paint your design.   Don't be afraid - it's fun to just see what happens, and it doesn't have to be perfect!  Just have fun with it.  I used acrylic paint, which you can find at Target or any craft store.

Next, trim the dowel to length, or you can have this done in the store (Home Depot, etc.) so you don't have to do this at home.  It really works better with a larger saw (I had Chip do it).  Place the dowel where you would like it to go, and screw in two of the 2" wood screws through the back.  I didn't pre-drill holes, but that can be very helpful!  Add your picture hanging hardware to the back, and hang!

Here is a slightly more "girly" styling of the shelf.  It's not a ton of space for display, but it's just right for smaller treasures and items.  Vivi is always hoarding tiny little things she finds to be special, and she would love this easy way to display her rocks, little figurines, or a favorite book.
