adventuring at jekyll island

jekyll island family vacation

I wrote previously a bit about our Jekyll Island vacation, but here is a little more about what we did.  I was a bit apprehensive before our trip about the girls being entertained; I was mostly expecting to be on the beach, which is fun, but with a tiny baby and a fair skinned redhead I didn't want us to be in the sun too much.  I was so wonderfully surprised with the amount of fun and interesting things to do, and found the pace of the island to be perfect for our young family of five.

The beaches were certainly entertaining, with treasure after treasure to be found, and a seemingly endless expanse of sand castle possibilities at low tide (and of course, the ever lovely Driftwood Beach!).  It was so nice that the ocean was relatively calm, and at low tide it's very un-itimidating and easy to explore, which is great when you have younger kids to watch closely.

We were also completely smitten with an afternoon spent at the Jekyll Island Club, in the historic district of the island.  The meticulously kept grounds, and gorgeous spanish moss draped everywhere are so completely romantic.  The girls were also thrilled to see three weddings happening the afternoon we were there!  I'd highly recommend doing high tea if you have little girls.  It was so nice, not overly expensive, and you can go early (we went at 4:30!), which was perfect after a full day of playing and adventuring.  The little people were ready for an early supper and bedtime, and the mini peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with sprinkles on the side won them over.  They loved exploring this place!

Another favorite outing was the The Georgia Sea Turtle Center.  It was such a great place to learn about these amazing creatures, and the girls loved seeing the turtle patients being treated.  We bought them each a little stuffed turtle while there, and Brigette still is playing turtle doctor with him, so the plight of the sea turtle definitely stuck with them after this experience!

We also had a nature walk with a ranger, which was an hour very well spent.  We visited a pond, and talked about the wildlife, such as turtles, birds, and alligators.  We all learned a lot about the lifestyle of these animals, and the girls especially loved learning about baby alligators.  The icing on the cake was getting to meet Tiny, a three year old alligator, and even getting to hold him.

Isn't he cute?  I was really impressed that both girls were up for holding him!  It was such a good hands-on learning experience.

Jekyll Island was truly a delightful wonderland for us!  The girls keep asking us when we will go back, and we look forward to having more adventures together there.  See my previous post to learn more about our trip!
